Heat Advisory Issued, DSS Opens Lobby as Cooling Station

Jul 30, 2021

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a heat advisory for Cumberland County beginning at 11 a.m. and expiring at 7 p.m. today. High temperatures and humidity will result in a heat index of 105 degrees today.

The Cumberland County Department of Social Services has opened an auxiliary lobby as a cooling station for residents who do not have access to air conditioning. The lobby is on the first floor waiting area by reception desk No. 10. Anyone entering DSS and other County buildings must wear a face mask or covering regardless of vaccination status. DSS is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Social Services opens the lobby to residents on days when the heat index reaches 100 degrees, and a heat advisory is issued. The DSS building is located at 1225 Ramsey St. Residents who want to utilize the cooling station should use the rear entrance facing Hillsboro Street.

Libraries Open

Residents can also beat the heat at any of the Cumberland County Public Libraries. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Find the nearest branch at cumberlandcountync.gov/library. A face mask or covering is required regardless of vaccination status at all County buildings.

Heat Advisory Safety

Cumberland County Emergency Services reminds all residents to take precautions during the hot weather. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, check on relatives and neighbors. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

“As we are in the heart of summer, always be prepared for high heat and humidity,” said Emergency Services Director Gene Booth. “Stay hydrated at all times, have a plan to stay cool and know the signs of a heat emergency.”

If you work or spend time outside, schedule strenuous activities in the early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. A heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911.
