 Fuel Your Mind National Children's Book Week 2000 November 12-18

National Children's Book Week is a time-honored tradition. Celebrated since 1919, it is dedicated to spreading the word about children's literature and encouraging the joys of reading. Annually, the week before Thanksgiving, schools and libraries applaud books and reading with special programs to mark this special event.
Special National Children's Book Week Programs

- Respect Begins With Me Puppet PlayAdults and children of all ages are invited to kickoff National Children's Book Week with a play about how the flare for reading fuels our minds and flames our character.
- Mon., Nov. 13 7:00 pm (North Regional Branch 822-1998)
- Get Your Teddy Ready!Children 2-8 years old can bring their teddy bear and celebrate National American Teddy Bear Day with stories, songs, and puppets.
- Tues., Nov. 14 10:00 am (Headquarters 483-7727)
- Folktale Puppet ShowChildren of all ages are invited to a puppet show of favorite folktales to celebrate National Children's Book Week. Space is limited, so groups of 6 or more are asked to register.

Wed., Nov. 15 3:30 pm (North Regional 822-1998) - Chicken Soup StoriesChildren 5-12 years old can celebrate Children's Book Week with Eva Confer as she shares her story published in Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul. Participants will hear other Chicken Soup stories and create a book for their own personal stories.

- Harry Potter Dress Up & "Quizzitch" MatchChildren 5-12 years old are invited to dress up as their favorite character in the Harry Potter Series and participate in a "Quizzitch" match. Participants will be divided into four groups to see how many questions they can answer from the following four books: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone; Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Sat., Nov. 18 1:00 pm (East Regional Branch 485-2955) - Fuel Your MindChildren 5-12 years old are invited to enjoy a smorgasbord of stories, riddles, fun activities, and a scrumptious dessert to celebrate Children's Book Week. Registration is required by calling the appropriate branch.

- Colorful ChameleonsChildren 3-7 years old are invited to listen to colorful chameleon stories.

- Celebrate National Children's Book WeekChildren 6-12 years old are invited to celebrate Children's Book Week with fun games, storytelling, and book reading. Participants can dress up like their favorite book character and win a prize.

- National Children's Book WeekChildren 5-12 years old are invited to celebrate Children's Book Week. Participants will hear award winning books, learn about children's book authors and create their very own book to keep.

- Animal FootprintsChildren 7-9 years old will learn about and create animal tracks through the use of the library's nonfiction animal book collection.

- Doll & Book Display (Headquarters 483-1580 ext. 300)In celebration of National Children's Book Week, the Lafayette Doll Club and Highlander Doll Club, both members of the United Federation of Doll Clubs, will sponsor a display of dolls based on children's books. The dolls and accompanying books will be on display throughout the month of November in the 2nd floor display case at the Headquarters Library.
