Cumberland County Animal Services is reminding residents to keep their furry friends safe this Fourth of July.

Animal Services Director Elaine Smith encourages residents to keep pets inside their homes during the night of July 4 when fireworks may be discharged and frighten them – even if they’re primarily outdoor pets.

“A lot of our pets are acclimated to noises, obviously because of our proximity to Fort Bragg,” Smith said. “However, it’s always better to be safe than sorry since your pets could be startled by the lights and the noise of fireworks and run away.”

Smith also cautioned pet owners to be careful about sharing “people” food with pets during cookouts or other celebrations because any sudden change in an animal’s diet can cause problems like an upset stomach, diarrhea or vomiting.  

“Lean meats and non-fatty foods are best to give to your pets if you are going to share food with them,” Smith says. “Also avoid giving pets spicy foods.”

Pets, like people can also suffer from heat stroke. Make sure dogs and cats have shade and cool water at all times. If your pet is showing signs of distress, call your veterinarian immediately.
