Judge E. Maurice Braswell Courthouse Illuminated Green In Support of Veterans During ‘OPERATION GREEN LIGHT’

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County announced that the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Courthouse has been illuminated in green light as part of Operation Green Light to show support for military veterans and raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.

Operation Green Light is a new national initiative in which Cumberland County is participating in partnership with the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veteran Services Officers.

In addition to lighting the Courthouse green, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners also adopted a proclamation in support of Operation Green Light during their regular meeting on Monday, November 11, 2022. As the proclamation notes, Cumberland County is home to the largest military installation in the world in Fort Bragg and has the third largest veterans population in the State at approximately 50,864 in FY 2021.

Following the Board’s unanimous adoption of the proclamation, Commissioners Chairman Glenn Adams noted that the intent behind lighting the Courthouse green is to show “that we are part of Operation Green Light for the entire nation, thanking our veterans for what they’ve done. We ask you to come by and see that this is a board that values our veterans.”

He also encouraged others to join in the County’s display of support for veterans and their families. Residents are encouraged to join the County in participating in Operation Green Light by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. Businesses, nonprofits and others are also invited to participate. Shining a green light lets our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day (Nov. 7 -13), participants are encouraged to continue shining the light year-round. Participants are also encouraged to share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
