Now Accepting Applications for Sheriff Appointment 

In accordance with North Carolina General Statutes §§ 162-2 and 162-5, the Board of Commissioners will appoint a qualified resident to serve the remainder of the term. Qualifications include:

  • The applicant is at least 21 years of age.
  • The applicant has not been convicted of a felony in any state.
  • The applicant is a qualified voter in Cumberland County.

Application Process

Residents who meet the legal qualifications to serve as Sheriff under NC General Statute 162-2 are invited to submit application materials to the Board of Commissioners.

Required Materials

  • Letter of interest, including eligibility statement
  • Resume
  • The valid disclosure statement of no felony convictions or expungements, issued within 90 days prior to the appointment, prepared by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission pursuant to Article 3 of Chapter 17E of the General Statutes.
  • Any additional information the applicant wishes to include

Application Submission

  • Submit seven complete copies, one for each Commissioner
  • Hand-deliver to: Andrea Tebbe, Clerk to the Board Judge E. Maurice Braswell Cumberland County Courthouse, 5th Floor 117 Dick St., Fayetteville, N.C.
  • Deadline: 5 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2025

Appointment Meeting

The Board will determine their appointment choice during the first meeting in August.

  • Location: Judge E. Maurice Braswell Cumberland County Courthouse, 117 Dick St., Fayetteville, N.C. Room 118
  • Note: Applicants who have submitted all required materials will have the opportunity to speak before the Board at this meeting.

Cumberland County Shows Documentary Exploring Veterans’ Challenges

FAYETTEVILLE, NC Cumberland County Government is partnering with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) to show The Veteran’s Battlefield, the newest documentary from NCACC’s 100 Strong Productions.

The screening will take place on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Crown Ballroom, 1960 Coliseum Dr., Fayetteville, NC. A Veteran Resources Information Fair will be held prior to the screening at 5 p.m. in the Ballroom and a panel discussion will follow. 

WHAT:  

The Veteran’s Battlefield is a documentary that explores veterans' challenges in North Carolina and how counties and residents can best support our veteran population. North Carolina is home to around 700,000 veterans and has the eighth-largest veteran population in the nation. Fort Liberty is in Cumberland County and has the third largest veterans population among all 100 counties behind only Wake and Mecklenburg, with more than 52,000 veterans calling Cumberland County home.

Veterans face a wide range of challenges that can seem insurmountable. The Veteran’s Battlefield highlights these challenges and how county Veteran Service Officers and community leaders are working to support veterans.

The documentary showing is free and open to the public. Light snacks will be available. Registration is encouraged but optional. If you plan to attend, please confirm by going online here.

WHO

Cumberland County Government is hosting this event in partnership with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. County Commissioners, local stakeholders and organizations will distribute information and discuss veteran services and support.
