Soil and Water Conservation Contests Open To Students

The Cumberland Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) invites elementary, middle and high school students in the county to participate in the annual poster, essay, slide show and public speaking contests. The contests are sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

 

The theme for this year’s contest is “The Living Soil” and the deadline to submit entries is Jan. 18. The contest events are open to the following school grades.

 

Poster Contest – Grades 3-6

Each school will judge posters from each grade level to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners with only the district 1st place posters submitted for Area VII competition.

 

Essay Contest – Grade 6

Each school may submit more than one essay to the Cumberland SWCD. One essay from all entries of 6th grade essays will advance to Area VII competition.

 

Computer Designed Slide Show – Grade 6

Each school may submit more than one computer designed slide show.  The district will send 1st place winner to the Area VII competition.

 

Public Speaking – Grades 7-8

Each school may select one or more contestants from each grade to compete in the public speaking contest. The speech must be 4 – 6 minutes long. One winner from each grade will advance to Area VII competition.

 

Computer Designed Poster Contest – Grade 9

Each school may submit more than one computer designed poster.  The district will send 1st place winner to the Area competition.

 

All participants will receive a ribbon. First place winners will receive a gift card for $50 and a certificate, 2nd place winners will receive a gift card for $30 and a certificate and 3rd place winners will receive a $20 gift card and a certificate.

 

Area VII includes Soil and Water Conservation Districts from Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Richmond, Robeson Sampson and Scotland counties. The 1st place winner from Area VII will be forwarded to the State level competition.  Area VII and State levels also have cash winners.
