Ann Street Landfill Expansion Public Comment Period Open

Mar 8, 2023, 11:26 AM by Lou Cherry

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Solid Waste is receiving public comment regarding the future of the Ann Street Landfill from now through Friday, March 17, 2023.

The Ann Street Landfill is a critical resource for waste disposal for Cumberland County residents and municipalities, including the City of Fayetteville. Every day, thousands of County residents and businesses rely on the Cumberland County Solid Waste Department and the Ann Street Landfill for waste disposal.

The landfill, which has operated at this site since 1980, will reach capacity in just seven years. Before then, the County must plan for waste disposal beyond 2030. After thorough study of various possible alternatives, County leaders have concluded that building a transfer station at the Ann Street Landfill is the most feasible short-term solution to allow for a longer-term expansion of the existing Ann Street Landfill to provide decades of additional life at the landfill.

The County needs to act on the proposed strategy and is seeking to engage the neighboring residents and businesses and the greater Cumberland County community. This feedback will help identify fair and achievable strategies to reduce potential impacts to the neighboring community as well as identify ways the County can work toward being a good neighbor while providing the highest level of service.

The County held a public open house March 2 at the Cumberland County Department of Social Services where participants spoke with members of the project team, learned about proposed solutions, and shared their feedback on how we can be a better neighbor.

In addition to the in-person meeting, residents are invited to view a virtual public meeting through the project website at www.cumberlandcountync.gov/annstreetplan and provide feedback on the proposed strategy and any concerns they have related to that strategy. The virtual meeting will be available until March 17. Comments may be provided via the website, by emailing annstreetlandfill@cumberlandcountync.gov, by calling 910-505-9334, or through standard mail at 698 Ann Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301.

The project website also includes a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section, Alternative Disposal Analysis Report, Environmental Justice Report, information on how a landfill operates and the County’s ongoing efforts to Reimagine Ann Street Landfill and Solid Waste in Cumberland County. The website will continue to be updated with new information over the coming months and years as the project moves forward.

You can also find out what happens to your waste by watching the “Where Your Trash Goes in Cumberland County” on the CumberlandCountyNC YouTube channel.
