Jul 15, 2021, 09:35 AM by User Not Found

The Fayetteville - Cumberland County Locks Creek Debris Removal Project finished two months ahead of schedule. The project start date was June 6, 2021 and estimated completion date was September 2021. The project was completed ahead of schedule on July 7.

The City of Fayetteville and Cumberland County entered an interlocal agreement to financially support the Debris Removal Project in October 2019. The total cost of the project was $328,802.88 with approximately 835 cubic yards of debris extracted from Locks Creek.

Debris and sediment were removed from 33 locations along the creek with most of the debris and sediment in areas impacted by Hurricanes Matthew and Florence.

Residents and business owners may see relief of some flooding during smaller storm events. The removed debris was blocking areas along the creek. City leaders are submitting results of a flood study to the North Carolina Flood Mapping program. The request is for future maps to designate areas along Locks Creek as flood hazard areas.

A flood hazard designation could: allow residents who participate in the National Flood Insurance Program to receive hazard mitigation assistance and require developers to build to higher standards.
