Hazard Mitigation Plan Approved to Help Better Prepare for Natural Disasters

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently approved the Cumberland-Hoke Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The plan is a long-term strategy that reduces the community’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Its purpose is to identify, assess and lessen risks to better protect the people and property in Cumberland County from natural disasters.

“The approval of the Hazard Mitigation Plan will certainly help us stay prepared as we’re in the middle of hurricane season,” Emergency Services Director Gene Booth said. “The plan will ensure Cumberland County will continue to be eligible for federal disaster assistance.”

According to FEMA, disasters causing physical, financial and emotional losses can be reduced significantly through hazard mitigation planning. The process encourages communities to improve day-to-day decisions regarding land-use planning, floodplain management, site design and other activities.

When applying for certain types of non-emergency disaster assistance, FEMA requires a hazard mitigation plan. These requirements are part of the laws, regulations and policies surrounding hazard mitigation planning. State mitigation plans must be approved every five years. Local and tribal mitigation plans must be approved at least once every five years. To read the hazard mitigation plan, click here.
