FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Emergency Services is canceling all burning permits and prohibiting all open burning until further notice due to increased hazardous forest fire conditions.
The N.C. Department of Agriculture Consumer Services which oversees the state Forest Service, is using authority under the law (NC G.G. 106-944 and 106-946) to ban open burning statewide.
In addition to the state burn ban order, the Cumberland County Fire Marshal implemented a burn ban countywide on all open burning in accordance with Section 6.2-26 of the County Fire Prevention Ordinance and Section 307.1.1 of the 2018 North Carolina Fire Code. The additional limitation placed on residents by Cumberland County DOES apply to fires within 100 feet of a dwelling.
“Emergency Services made this decision based on our rating for fire danger and how dry the weather has been,” said Fire Marshal Kevin Lowther. “Cumberland County currently is at a moderate risk, and it is extremely important to refrain from all open burning as we are experiencing such dry weather.”
Residents can monitor the county’s rating for fire danger at https://legacy.climate.ncsu.edu/fwip/nc_danger/ The map is based on a National Fire Danger Rating System parameter describing environmental conditions that could cause fires to ignite and spread.
