Cumberland County Files Lawsuit Against Chemours and DuPont Alleging Products Caused Groundwater Well Contamination

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Crueger Dickinson LLC and Baron & Budd, P.C. together filed a lawsuit today on behalf of Cumberland County against chemical companies whose products caused severe groundwater contamination in the County. The firms have been leading litigation over environmental contamination around the country and this is the latest in a string of lawsuits seeking to hold companies responsible for environmental pollution resulting from the discharge of “forever chemicals” called “PFAS,” including a product known as “GenX” that has been alleged to have contaminated numerous wells and water sources throughout the community. These dangerous chemicals have been detected at two elementary schools.

The complaint was filed against the Chemours Company; The Chemours Company FC, LLC; Defendant E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company; DuPont de Nemours, Inc.; and Corteva, Inc., manufacturers of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The Complaint alleges that the companies discharged these toxic chemicals into Cumberland County air, groundwater, and surface water for decades, in blatant disregard for the effects on Cumberland County and its residents, despite knowing the dangers these chemicals possess.

“These companies have used the environment surrounding the Fayetteville Works facility as a dumping ground for hundreds of chemicals while assuring the E.P.A. and state agencies that they were doing no such thing,” the Complaint alleges. As a result, groundwater in Cumberland County has been contaminated by Defendants’ toxic chemicals, with thousands of Cumberland County residents using groundwater wells as their sole water source.
