HBCU/MSI Internship Program

Public Health Internship South Central Region (1)

The South-Central Region of Local Public Health Departments established a Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions (HBCUs/MSIs) Internship Program to support the goal of building a strong and inclusive workforce. The internship program fosters workforce development and increases access for HBCU/MSI students to learn about public health careers.

The HBCUs/MSIs Internship Program provides an opportunity for undergraduate, graduate, and professional level students to gain experience that enhances skill development including, but not limited to, data collection and analysis, research, program administering and monitoring, community engagement and best practices in environmental science. Internship opportunities are offered during the fall and spring school semesters. They also offer flexible employment appointments with full-time, part-time, on-site, remote or hybrid options.

We strive to ensure our interns have skill-based professional experiences that reflect workplace practices that meet the needs of the public sector. In addition, we assign interns with LHD employees that serve as mentors to guide them during the intern employment. The program includes training sessions for professional development and weekly check-ins with interns to gauge concerns and areas of improvement that will help empower them to pursue public health careers.

We are excited to provide internships opportunities during the 2023-2024 school year. Students attending HBCUs/MSIs are encouraged to apply for these opportunities listed on our website. Most of the internships offer remote or a hybrid of remote and in-person experiences. Salaries for the internships are $15.00 per hour.
